A Celtic Experience

The Celtic Experience marked a very special exhibition of art works by the local South Coast Pastel Society (SCPS) at the Mechanics Hall in Moruya, September 5-13th.

Judging of the art works was through the expertise and courtesy of Barbara Romalis and Janet Jones, and the artworks incorporate the decorative art, spirituality, history, and in some cases the artists own experience and background from well known Celtic countries such as Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

East meets West in Artist’s Work

Kaoru Rauter’s signature reveals the mix of East and West that makes her art so distinctive. ‘Kaoru’ is crafted in the calligraphy of her native Japan, while ‘Rauter’ follows in traditional European lettering style.

Kauru’s striking paintings combine the asymmetrical arrangement, pattern, and jewel-like colour of Japanese art, with the tonal qualities and traditional subject matter of western art. Kauru is not limited to one genre but paints landscapes, seascapes and snow scenes, as well as still life, flowers and animals. She enjoys painting as much from the imagination as from life, but says, “I have to feel the energy of the environment before I can draw it. I have to feel the wave coming, experience the cold of the snow and the heat of the sun”.
